WILL CAMPBELL, Director of Jazz Ensembles
(jazz improvisation, saxophone)
Originally from North Carolina, Will Campbell is the Director of Jazz Studies and Saxophone Instructor at UNC Charlotte. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance and Literature degree from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the of Bachelor of Music (Jazz Studies) and Master of Music (Saxophone Performance) from the University of North Texas. While attending UNT, he was a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band and directed the Three O’Clock Lab Band. From 1990 to 1994, he toured internationally as a member of the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra. Recording credits include Blue Light, Red Light, When My Heart Finds Christmas, and The New York Big Band Concert (Video). Dr. Campbell has performed with artists such as Marvin Stamm, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Doc Severinsen, Louie Bellson, and ensembles such as The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra, The Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. In 1995, he was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship Grant, which allowed him to study privately with renowned saxophonist Dick Oatts in New York City. Since 1999, he has been a member of the University of North Texas Summer Jazz Workshop Faculty. Dr. Campbell has performed at conferences for the North American Saxophone Alliance, International Association for Jazz Education, and the World Saxophone Congress and has published two articles in the Jazz Education Journal. His arrangement of Pure Imagination for jazz ensemble is now available through UNC Jazz Press (University of Northern Colorado). Dr. Campbell is an Artist/Clinician for the Conn-Selmer Company and plays Selmer saxophones exclusively.

Coordinator of Jazz Studies
Ronald Carter is Coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program and director of the world-renowned NIU Jazz Ensemble.
Carter has presented workshops as guest conductor, artist, clinician, or adjudicator at Western Illinois University, University of Northern Colorado, Iowa State University, University of Kansas, Southern Illinois University, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, Northern Illinois University, Hampton University, Loyola University, Coe College, Augustana College, VanderCook College of Music, and Georgia State College. He has performed these same duties at numerous high schools and at regional and national conferences. He has also directed all-state jazz bands in Illinois, Indiana, Rhode Island, Missouri, Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Kentucky, Vermont, Arizona, Kansas, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
Ron Carter spent over 18 years in the St. Louis metropolitan area as an educator and professional freelance musician on saxophone, clarinet, flute, and as a vocalist. He co-directed the group Infiniti and performed with the George Hudson Orchestra. Carter has also performed professionally with Clark Terry, Lena Horne, Lou Rawls, the Jimmy Dorsey Band, Wallace Roney, Terell Stafford, the Temptations, the Dells, Oliver Lake, Hamiett Bluiett, Leon Thomas, Art Davis, Fareed Haque, Joseph Bowie, Frank Mantooth, Delbert Bernadella, Byron Bowie, Orbert Davis, Carl Allen, and many others.
An abbreviated list of his honors and awards includes Downbeat Magazine’s Jazz Educator’s Hall of Fame, The Woody Herman Music Award (Birch Creek Music Center), the 1991 Milken National Distinguished Educator Award, Southern Illinois University Excellence in Teaching Award, and the St. Louis American newspaper’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
Carter’s current projects include serving as director of the Gallery 37-South Shore Cultural Center Summer Youth Jazz Ensemble in Chicago, International Consultant for the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition sponsored by Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, Miles Davis 2001, St. Louis, Program Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center Band Director Academy, member of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, author for Alfred Publications, and recently-elected vice president of the 11,000-member International Association for Jazz Educators (IAJE).
Carter is currently a Conn/Selmer Instrument Artist Clinician/Educational Specialist.
